When the load needs more planning
For palletised goods, heavier freight, full loads, part loads and repeat transport. The correct body, loading method and receiving appointment matter as much as the journey between postcodes.
- Give the loaded footprint and weight of each pallet or item.
- Confirm forklift, dock, tail lift or other handling at both ends.
- Include site slots, access limits and any delivery sequence.
A part load can suit a flexible schedule. A dedicated vehicle or full-load arrangement may be more appropriate when timing, segregation or handling requirements demand it.

The smallest suitable vehicle is often the sensible starting point. It still needs enough usable space, payload and handling capacity, with safe access at collection and delivery.

Measure the goods as they travel
Include packaging, the pallet and any overhang in the length, width and height. Give the total freight weight and the weight of each item. Gross vehicle weight, such as 7.5t or 18t, is not the freight payload.
A load can fit inside the body but still fail to pass through the door, exceed the equipment rating or leave insufficient room to secure it. A photograph helps with awkward shapes, but it does not replace measurements.
A pallet count is only a starting point
A standard UK pallet is 1,200 × 1,000 mm; a Euro pallet is 1,200 × 800 mm. The loaded footprint may be larger. Confirm the actual dimensions, whether goods can be stacked, and any orientation restrictions.
Usable pallet positions depend on body dimensions, overhang, weight distribution, restraint space and delivery order. Refrigeration, cranes and mounted equipment can alter useful payload and loading arrangements.
How will it come off the vehicle?
Forklift or loading dock
Confirm that equipment and an authorised operator will be available at the booked time. Side loading may need a curtainsider or flatbed. A dock needs compatible vehicle height and a clear approach.
Tail lift and pallet truck
A tail lift lowers the load; a pallet truck moves it on a suitable surface. Check every weight on the platform, permitted handling method, footprint and load centre. Gravel, soft ground, steps and steep gradients need a different plan.
Crane, mounted forklift or a crew
A HIAB-type loader crane lifts; a MOFFETT-type truck-mounted forklift handles supported loads at ground level. Neither is interchangeable with two-person manual handling. Each needs its own access, capacity and operating-space assessment.

Right to the receiving point.
A journey down the M5 or along the M4 is only part of the plan. The final road, loading space and recipient’s deadline matter just as much, particularly for rural, coastal and controlled sites.
Bristol, Bath & urban deliveries
For Bristol, Clifton, central business addresses and Bath, give the actual loading entrance, permitted hours and vehicle limits. Street parking, service-yard access and an emissions-zone check are different requirements.
Bristol and Bath operate separate Clean Air Zones. Check the assigned vehicle and exact route using the Bristol vehicle checker and Bath council guidance. Bath’s private-car exemption is not a blanket exemption for commercial vans or HGVs. Do not assume a delivery address creates an exemption.
Avonmouth, Royal Portbury & Plymouth
For Bristol Port, identify Avonmouth or Royal Portbury, the terminal, operator, release reference and receiving slot. The port publishes safety-induction requirements for personnel working on its estate, with a separate container-collection induction link. Bristol Port induction guidance.
Confirm the requirements applying to the driver and task with the site contact. For Plymouth, specify the exact commercial port, warehouse or ferry terminal. Container equipment, customs work, dock access and ferry transport each need an agreed scope; a port postcode alone is not enough.
Devon, Cornwall & the final approach
For Exeter, Plymouth, Torbay, Barnstaple, Tiverton, Truro, Newquay, Falmouth and Penzance, send the full address and a contact who knows the goods entrance. For villages, farms and coastal premises, include gate width, low branches, gradients, road limits and turning space.
A vehicle that fits the goods may still be too large for the approach. Photographs and a precise entrance location help us assess that before dispatch. Include whether the unloading surface is firm and level, and whether a forklift or another agreed method is available.
Gloucestershire, Wiltshire & Somerset
For Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud, Cirencester, Swindon, Chippenham and the wider Wiltshire towns, distinguish an industrial loading bay from a retail or residential handover. Give pallet quantities, stackability and any booking reference.
Taunton, Bridgwater, Yeovil, Weston-super-Mare, Wells and Frome jobs may be urgent one-off loads or part of a regular route. If there are several stops, list their individual receiving windows, load allocations and any returns, rather than giving only the first and last postcodes.
Dorset, hospitality & event destinations
For Bournemouth, Poole, Dorchester, Weymouth and rural Dorset, explain whether delivery ends at a goods-in point, a shop, a hotel or an event site. Narrow lanes and restricted service areas can affect vehicle and crew choice.
For two-person handling, specify stairs, lifts, carrying distance and the packaged item sizes and weights. For event refrigeration, tell us the dates, positioning, available power and collection plan. These details need to be agreed separately from simply moving a refrigerated load.
Airports, long-distance work & Europe
For Bristol, Exeter or Bournemouth Airport, name the handling agent or receiving organisation, cargo release reference, exact entrance and appointment. Landside collection does not automatically include airside access or customs handling.
For a long South West journey or European movement, work back from the receiver’s deadline. Include load readiness, road travel, breaks and rest where applicable, terminal check-in and any crossing. There is no fixed daily mileage that guarantees every driver can complete every job.

Two-person delivery
For goods needing an agreed crew, explain item weights, the route from vehicle to delivery point, stairs, lifts and the final placement required. Photographs and access measurements help us assess the job.
Two-person delivery does not automatically include unpacking, assembly, installation or removal of packaging. Set out the required tasks so they can be agreed.
Temperature control & event refrigeration
Refrigerated transport needs the goods, required temperature range, collection condition, journey and handover arrangements specified. Confirm any monitoring or documentation requirements when enquiring.
Event refrigeration is a separate requirement for refrigeration at the venue. Share the event dates, access, positioning, power arrangements and collection time. A refrigerated delivery is not automatically an event-hire booking.

What affects the collection and deadline?
Start with when the goods will actually be packed, released and ready to load. The collection estimate depends on a suitable available vehicle, its position, access and any equipment needed.
Onward timing includes the journey, loading and unloading, traffic, receiving slots and applicable driving and working-time limits. There is no reliable universal miles-per-day promise for every vehicle or job.
We assess same-day, overnight, weekend and out-of-hours requirements against those details. Tell us the real deadline, including any earlier goods-in closing time.
What affects the price?
The quote needs to account for vehicle positioning, the loaded journey, vehicle/body choice, relevant route charges and the time involved at both ends. Waiting, extra stops, additional labour, specialist equipment and a return or onward movement can change the cost.
For Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, islands or European movements, give the destination and deadline early. Ferry availability, check-in times, onward access and the goods documentation need to be assessed together. Agree who supplies any customs information and clearance services.
A clear load description and receiving plan reduce avoidable uncertainty. The price is not simply fuel cost multiplied by the distance between two postcodes.

Can you collect an urgent load in the South West today?
Tell us the collection postcode, when the goods will be ready, the load details and the delivery deadline. Collection around 45 minutes can be possible in many mainland areas, subject to location and a suitable available vehicle. Remote approaches, specialist equipment and HGV movements need their own timing assessment.
Which South West locations do you cover?
The directory keeps 40 locations across Bristol, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall, including the listed ports and airports. Ask about surrounding villages with both postcodes and access details. A place appearing in the directory does not mean we have a depot there.
Can you reach a narrow lane or a remote Cornwall or Devon address?
We can assess the route and receiving point before allocating a vehicle. Send the entrance location, gate width, height and weight restrictions, turning space, gradient and surface information. Include photographs where useful. If the load fits only a vehicle that cannot safely reach the site, an alternative handover needs to be agreed.
Does Bath’s car exemption mean a delivery van is exempt too?
No. Bath’s private-car exemption does not generally extend to commercial vans or HGVs. Check the exact assigned vehicle using the official scheme information. Bristol has a separate scheme, and an emissions check does not replace the checks for street access, loading times and unloading space.
What details are needed for a Bristol Port collection?
Identify Avonmouth or Royal Portbury, the exact terminal, operator, cargo reference, release and appointment. Confirm the applicable induction, driver and equipment requirements with the site contact. The port’s published induction guidance does not by itself confirm that a driver is cleared for a particular terminal or collection.
Can you collect freight from a South West airport?
We can assess a road collection from the confirmed handling facility at Bristol, Exeter or Bournemouth Airport. Send the agent, release reference, goods dimensions and weights, collection slot and final delivery deadline. Agree any airside, customs or specialist handling requirements before booking.
Can a South West load reach a distant destination on the same day?
The answer depends on the actual start point, readiness, vehicle, journey and receiver’s hours. A dedicated vehicle can remove intermediate depot handling, but it does not remove road travel or applicable driver limits. For European work, allow for check-in, the crossing and the agreed documentation arrangements too.
How should a pallet be prepared for collection from a rural site?
Use a sound pallet, secure the goods and measure the complete loaded footprint, height and gross weight, including packaging. Declare overhang and anything that cannot be stacked. Tell us about loose ground, slopes and kerbs, and agree the loading equipment at both ends. Do not assume a pump truck can cross gravel or uneven ground.
Choosing, booking and managing the vehicle
Will my dedicated courier delivery stay on the same vehicle?
A dedicated movement is normally collected and delivered on the same vehicle, travelling between the agreed points without a parcel-network sorting hub. Specify any extra stops, return collection or timed handover. If an unusual load or route needs a different arrangement, that should be discussed before booking. Shared or part-load haulage follows its agreed service plan.
Can you arrange evening, overnight or weekend transport?
Yes, we can discuss urgent and planned out-of-hours movements, and our phones are answered 24/7/365. Confirm that someone can release the goods and that the receiver will accept delivery at the proposed time. The suitable vehicle, equipment and driver schedule still need to be confirmed.
Do I need a courier van or a haulage vehicle?
Send the packaged length, width and height, item count, total weight and individual weights. A van may suit urgent parts or a compact load; multiple pallets, heavier freight or particular loading methods can need a rigid or articulated vehicle. We check the body, usable payload, door opening, loading equipment and access together. You do not need to choose the category before enquiring.
Can you deliver pallets without a forklift at the destination?
Possibly, using a suitable tail lift and pallet truck or another agreed handling arrangement. Give the loaded pallet footprint and weight, ground condition and distance to the handover point. Platform size, load centre and every weight carried on the lift must be checked. Gravel, soft ground, steps and steep gradients cannot be solved simply by requesting a tail lift.
When should I request an electric pump truck?
When pallet-truck handling is needed for an individual loaded pallet weighing 800 kg or more, request an electric pump truck. This is Synergix's booking requirement, not a universal legal threshold. Lighter pallets may also need powered handling. The pallet, equipment, lift platform, surface and operating space must still be suitable.
Can LoadCheck tell me which vehicle to book?
LoadCheck gives a first estimate using packaged dimensions, weights and quantities. It does not confirm the door opening, available payload, lifting equipment, site access or vehicle availability for a particular booking. Use the result with the load details when you ask our team to confirm the movement.
How is the transport price worked out?
The quote depends on the actual load, vehicle and equipment, positioning and loaded journey, timing, route charges and time at both sites. Extra stops, waiting, additional crew or specialist handling can alter it. Send both postcodes, dimensions, weights, readiness and deadline for a job-specific quote.
Will I receive tracking and proof of delivery?
Live tracking and electronic proof of delivery are available. Agree the contact, update method and any named recipient or delivery-reference requirement when booking. If the load, collection point or receiving slot changes, contact us promptly so suitability, timing and price can be reassessed.
