When the load needs more planning
For palletised goods, heavier freight, full loads, part loads and repeat transport. The correct body, loading method and receiving appointment matter as much as the journey between postcodes.
- Give the loaded footprint and weight of each pallet or item.
- Confirm forklift, dock, tail lift or other handling at both ends.
- Include site slots, access limits and any delivery sequence.
A part load can suit a flexible schedule. A dedicated vehicle or full-load arrangement may be more appropriate when timing, segregation or handling requirements demand it.

The smallest suitable vehicle is often the sensible starting point. It still needs enough usable space, payload and handling capacity, with safe access at collection and delivery.

Measure the goods as they travel
Include packaging, the pallet and any overhang in the length, width and height. Give the total freight weight and the weight of each item. Gross vehicle weight, such as 7.5t or 18t, is not the freight payload.
A load can fit inside the body but still fail to pass through the door, exceed the equipment rating or leave insufficient room to secure it. A photograph helps with awkward shapes, but it does not replace measurements.
A pallet count is only a starting point
A standard UK pallet is 1,200 × 1,000 mm; a Euro pallet is 1,200 × 800 mm. The loaded footprint may be larger. Confirm the actual dimensions, whether goods can be stacked, and any orientation restrictions.
Usable pallet positions depend on body dimensions, overhang, weight distribution, restraint space and delivery order. Refrigeration, cranes and mounted equipment can alter useful payload and loading arrangements.
How will it come off the vehicle?
Forklift or loading dock
Confirm that equipment and an authorised operator will be available at the booked time. Side loading may need a curtainsider or flatbed. A dock needs compatible vehicle height and a clear approach.
Tail lift and pallet truck
A tail lift lowers the load; a pallet truck moves it on a suitable surface. Check every weight on the platform, permitted handling method, footprint and load centre. Gravel, soft ground, steps and steep gradients need a different plan.
Crane, mounted forklift or a crew
A HIAB-type loader crane lifts; a MOFFETT-type truck-mounted forklift handles supported loads at ground level. Neither is interchangeable with two-person manual handling. Each needs its own access, capacity and operating-space assessment.
Practical East of England planning
From science parks
to freight terminals.
The A14, M11, A1 and routes towards the east coast connect a wide region. Plan the actual goods entrance, site appointment and unloading method as carefully as the main-road journey.
Cambridge, research sites & the historic centre
For a science park, laboratory or technology business, name the building, receiving department and responsible contact. Describe the goods and any packaging, temperature, security or handling requirements. A general courier request does not establish suitability for a regulated or temperature-sensitive consignment.
Cambridge’s historic centre has street-specific access controls and restricted loading periods. King’s Parade has separate barrier arrangements. Confirm the permitted route and receiving window rather than applying one time to every street. Current council access and loading guidance.
Peterborough, Huntingdon & the Fenland towns
For Peterborough, Huntingdon, Ely, Wisbech and nearby premises, send the correct yard entrance, load-ready time and delivery reference. A warehouse appointment and a farm or packhouse collection may need different vehicle bodies and equipment.
Check approach roads, bridge and vehicle limits, turning space and ground conditions. Tell us whether a forklift and trained operator will be available, or whether ground-level delivery needs a different arrangement.
Norfolk, Suffolk & coastal journeys
Norwich, King’s Lynn, Thetford, Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket cover very different journeys. A suitable vehicle’s position and the receiver’s cut-off matter as much as the mileage.
For rural or coastal sites, include gate dimensions, gradients, seasonal receiving arrangements and the distance from vehicle to handover. Pallet-truck delivery needs an appropriate surface. Temperature-controlled work needs its own agreed range and handling plan.
Felixstowe & controlled terminal collections
Identify whether the job is a container-terminal movement, a Ro/Ro handover or collection from a nearby warehouse. For Felixstowe container terminals, current port guidance covers RHIDES identification, the Driver Certification Programme and CBS appointment arrangements. Port of Felixstowe haulier guidance.
Send terminal, cargo or container references, confirmed release, appointment and onward deadline. Terminal rules differ by movement. Port coverage is not confirmation of container equipment, customs clearance or access approval; agree the actual scope before booking.
Essex, Tilbury & the Thames approaches
For Chelmsford, Colchester, Basildon, Southend-on-Sea, Braintree, Brentwood, Harlow and Clacton-on-Sea, identify the service yard and receiving time. For Grays, Thurrock and Tilbury, distinguish the port terminal from a warehouse or business outside it.
At Tilbury, give the terminal or operator, gate reference, release details and receiving contact. Confirm the relevant booking, driver and equipment requirements with that operator rather than borrowing Felixstowe’s procedure.
Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire & airport handovers
For Watford, St Albans, Stevenage, Hemel Hempstead, Hitchin, Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Bedford, Luton, Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard, send site height limits, loading points and goods-in hours. A van that fits the load still needs the right door opening and receiving arrangement.
For Stansted or Luton Airport, name the handling agent or receiving business and exact freight or goods entrance. Include the release reference and appointment. Airside access and customs work are separate matters to agree, not automatic inclusions in an airport courier booking.

East of England transport coverage does not mean that every listed town has a Synergix depot or storage facility.
Two-person delivery
For goods needing an agreed crew, explain item weights, the route from vehicle to delivery point, stairs, lifts and the final placement required. Photographs and access measurements help us assess the job.
Two-person delivery does not automatically include unpacking, assembly, installation or removal of packaging. Set out the required tasks so they can be agreed.
Temperature control & event refrigeration
Refrigerated transport needs the goods, required temperature range, collection condition, journey and handover arrangements specified. Confirm any monitoring or documentation requirements when enquiring.
Event refrigeration is a separate requirement for refrigeration at the venue. Share the event dates, access, positioning, power arrangements and collection time. A refrigerated delivery is not automatically an event-hire booking.

What affects the collection and deadline?
Start with when the goods will actually be packed, released and ready to load. The collection estimate depends on a suitable available vehicle, its position, access and any equipment needed.
Onward timing includes the journey, loading and unloading, traffic, receiving slots and applicable driving and working-time limits. There is no reliable universal miles-per-day promise for every vehicle or job.
We assess same-day, overnight, weekend and out-of-hours requirements against those details. Tell us the real deadline, including any earlier goods-in closing time.
What affects the price?
The quote needs to account for vehicle positioning, the loaded journey, vehicle/body choice, relevant route charges and the time involved at both ends. Waiting, extra stops, additional labour, specialist equipment and a return or onward movement can change the cost.
For Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, islands or European movements, give the destination and deadline early. Ferry availability, check-in times, onward access and the goods documentation need to be assessed together. Agree who supplies any customs information and clearance services.
A clear load description and receiving plan reduce avoidable uncertainty. The price is not simply fuel cost multiplied by the distance between two postcodes.

Your location and the delivery plan
How do you estimate collection time across the East of England?
We check the actual address, load and suitable available vehicle. Collection around 45 minutes can be possible for courier work in many mainland areas, but a rural Norfolk site or specialist requirement may need longer. Give the goods-ready time and latest delivery time so we can assess the whole movement.
Does the directory cover both inland towns and the east coast?
Yes. Its 42 entries include Cambridge, Peterborough, Norfolk and Suffolk towns, Essex, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, as well as the listed ports and airports. For surrounding villages or an unlisted site, send the actual postcodes and access details. The directory describes transport coverage, not premises in each place.
What should a Cambridge research or technology business specify?
Describe the goods accurately, including dimensions, weight, packaging and any temperature or handling needs. Name the building, department and receiving contact. If goods have special transport or regulatory requirements, declare them before booking so suitability can be assessed. Do not assume an ordinary van booking includes specialist facilities or approvals.
Can a courier enter Cambridge’s historic centre during the day?
It depends on the exact street, time and permission. Some approaches have continuing restrictions and King’s Parade has its own barrier hours. Arrange the permitted loading point and time with the receiver using current council guidance. An urgent deadline does not create an access exemption.
Are a Felixstowe warehouse collection and a container collection the same service?
No. A container-terminal movement can require terminal identification, driver certification, an appointment and suitable container equipment. A nearby warehouse handover may involve ordinary pallet loading instead. Tell us the exact terminal or business, release status, load and references so the service can be agreed correctly.
What if there is no safe unloading place at a rural delivery?
Tell us about narrow lanes, parked vehicles, soft ground, gradients and the distance to the receiving point before booking. A tail lift only works within an appropriate handling plan. If safe access is unavailable or changes, contact us to reassess the arrangement; a smaller vehicle or alternative handover must still suit the goods.
What details do Stansted, Luton or Tilbury handovers need?
Name the actual facility, operator or handling agent, goods entrance, receiving contact and appointment. Supply confirmed release and gate references where relevant. Check the operator’s own procedures. A passenger address or general port postcode is not enough, and Felixstowe’s terminal rules should not be applied automatically elsewhere.
Can I book a delivery with my own paperwork or a named receiver?
Tell us before collection and supply the required delivery reference or documents in the agreed format. Confirm who can sign and what evidence you need. Live tracking and electronic proof of delivery are available, but any additional receiving procedure needs to be included in the job instructions.
Can an East of England load continue across the UK or into Europe?
We can assess dedicated national and European movements against readiness, journey, driver limits and the receiver’s deadline. For a crossing, include check-in, release and documentation requirements and agree customs responsibilities. There is no universal daily mileage allowance that confirms every journey is achievable.
Choosing, booking and managing the vehicle
Will my dedicated courier delivery stay on the same vehicle?
A dedicated movement is normally collected and delivered on the same vehicle, travelling between the agreed points without a parcel-network sorting hub. Specify any extra stops, return collection or timed handover. If an unusual load or route needs a different arrangement, that should be discussed before booking. Shared or part-load haulage follows its agreed service plan.
Can you arrange evening, overnight or weekend transport?
Yes, we can discuss urgent and planned out-of-hours movements, and our phones are answered 24/7/365. Confirm that someone can release the goods and that the receiver will accept delivery at the proposed time. The suitable vehicle, equipment and driver schedule still need to be confirmed.
Do I need a courier van or a haulage vehicle?
Send the packaged length, width and height, item count, total weight and individual weights. A van may suit urgent parts or a compact load; multiple pallets, heavier freight or particular loading methods can need a rigid or articulated vehicle. We check the body, usable payload, door opening, loading equipment and access together. You do not need to choose the category before enquiring.
Can you deliver pallets without a forklift at the destination?
Possibly, using a suitable tail lift and pallet truck or another agreed handling arrangement. Give the loaded pallet footprint and weight, ground condition and distance to the handover point. Platform size, load centre and every weight carried on the lift must be checked. Gravel, soft ground, steps and steep gradients cannot be solved simply by requesting a tail lift.
When should I request an electric pump truck?
When pallet-truck handling is needed for an individual loaded pallet weighing 800 kg or more, request an electric pump truck. This is Synergix's booking requirement, not a universal legal threshold. Lighter pallets may also need powered handling. The pallet, equipment, lift platform, surface and operating space must still be suitable.
Can LoadCheck tell me which vehicle to book?
LoadCheck gives a first estimate using packaged dimensions, weights and quantities. It does not confirm the door opening, available payload, lifting equipment, site access or vehicle availability for a particular booking. Use the result with the load details when you ask our team to confirm the movement.
How is the transport price worked out?
The quote depends on the actual load, vehicle and equipment, positioning and loaded journey, timing, route charges and time at both sites. Extra stops, waiting, additional crew or specialist handling can alter it. Send both postcodes, dimensions, weights, readiness and deadline for a job-specific quote.
Will I receive tracking and proof of delivery?
Live tracking and electronic proof of delivery are available. Agree the contact, update method and any named recipient or delivery-reference requirement when booking. If the load, collection point or receiving slot changes, contact us promptly so suitability, timing and price can be reassessed.
